KICK THE NIC

Kick the Nic is a youth tobacco cessation program that helps young people understand tobacco addiction and includes group sessions for teens who want to quit smoking. The program consists of ten sessions, which include a range of activities relevant to tobacco cessation. A recent study determined that 71% of participants who attended KTN took some sort of action towards smoking cessation during the program while 18% of participants quit. At the same time, 54% of participants increased self-efficacy in either quitting or reducing smoking.

The facilitator and peer assistants will guide participants through the program by providing a social situation that appeal to teens; supportive, relaxed and with plenty of incentives (snacks, prizes etc.). The program consists of a number of sessions on a variety of topics including reasons why teens use tobacco, vulnerable situations, dealing with nicotine cravings, and planning for quit day.
